Kangderaar Vineyard

The Vineyard

Visitors to Kangderaar will be delighted by its location within the Kooyoora State Park.

An idyllic setting for vines sheltered by the towering stands of eucalypts, large boulders and nearby hills where Melville Caves, a spectacular granite outcrop is reputed to have been the hideout of bushranger Fran McCallum alias "Captain Melville" in the early 1850's.

While no longer home to wild bushrangers, the magnificent boulders and sweeping view certainly make Melville Caves a most worthwhile stop especially with a picnic and bottle of local wine.

Planting of the vineyard started in 1980 absorbing all free weekends and holidays. Today 4ha of vines are planted comprising mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay with lesser plantings of Riesling, Traminer and Touriga.

While Jim Nealy is passionate about producing bold regional Cabernet and Merlot he does enjoy experimenting with new styles and blends, Carmine a medium bodied red wine one such initiative.

The soil is largely decomposed granite and sand denuded from the nearby range of hills.  Challenging soil, long hot days and low rainfall provide a tough environment for growing vines.  The small bunches of intensely flavoured berries produced are of excellent quality.

The Winery

Kangderaar boasts a modern insulated, air-conditioned winery built to handle the hot summer days often experienced in the region.

An up to date refrigeration plant is used to assist with the production of various wine styles as is the well-equipped laboratory. A magnificent cellar built with local stone is nearing completion and will make ideal barrel storage.

Cellar Door

DAILY 10.00 am - 6.00 pm warmer months and 10.00 am - 5.00 pm cooler months.

A beautifully appointed cellar door features comfortable furniture and expansive views across the vineyards. Enjoy the wineries' fine wines in the company of the winemaker and browse through photographs and mementoes of the vineyard's establishment and growth.
