Sutton Grange

“Fine wine from thoroughbred country” 

Sutton Grange is situated on the granitic foothills of Mount Alexander.  The 400-hectare Sutton Grange property is one of the most picturesque in Victoria and is renowned for its thoroughbred racing facility.  In 1998 under the guidance of local winemaking legend Stuart Anderson, the first vines were planted.  The property now boasts 12 hectares of vines comprising Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Sangiovese and Fiano. 

The first wines are labeled as Fairbank, the original name of the property in the late 1800’s. The Fairbank wines are handcrafted by our winemaker, Gilles Lapalus, and combine his distinctive style and interpretation with our estate grown fruit.  With the 2003 vintage, the first release of the Sutton Grange estate represents the essence of this granitic terroir.

Since their release in 2003, our Fairbank wines have been wonderfully received by wine critics and wine lovers throughout Australia and Internationally (UK, Switzerland, France, Belgium).

Gilles Lapalus – Winemaker

Gilles Lapalus was born in Cluny, Burgundy into a family that has been entrenched in the wine industry for three generations. His interest in wine grew beyond the soils of Burgundy, graduating in oenology at Dijon University before undertaking winemaking work in several French regions, Tuscany and South America (Chile).

Gilles winemaking philosophy is strongly influenced by his French roots, delivering texture and finesse rather than blockbuster fruit-driven wines

The Sutton Grange winery is constructed from Western Australian limestone and features an impressive tasting room and cellar door with spectacular views of Mt Alexander.
