Avonmore Estate Sangiovese 2003

26 January 2006

This Bendigo boutique family owned wine producer is into bio-dynamics in a big way. What this means is that they use natural organic practices to grow their grapes in an environmentally friendly bio-dynamic way that works the soil and the vines in a positive and active way. It also means no synthetic pesticides, fungicides, weedicides, fertilisers or artificial additives are used.

The end product of all of this is healthy low yield vines that produce wine that is more natural, well rounded, and pure and fruit driven.

This Sangiovese red from Avonmore reflects the effort that has been put into producing it. Sangiovese (san-gi-o-ve-see) is a popular red grape variety that originated from Tuscany in Italy.

It has an intense ruby colour and produces medium bodied fruit driven easy drinking wines.

This is a lovely example with its gorgeous slightly earthy, spicy and vanillan aromas.

It is fruity with cherry, blackberry and plum characters yet smooth and well rounded on the palate.

Medium bodied and with extended length, this would go well with an Italian antipasto or some spaghetti marinara.
