BlackJack wins at Le Concours des Vins du Victoria
26 November 2008
Last
week BlackJack Vineyards won a gold medal and scooped the overall trophy for
Victoria’s Best Shiraz at the prestigious Le Concours des Vins du Victoria
event. The award-winning wine was the
Block 6 Shiraz 2006.
Le
Concours des Vins du Victoria is a unique wine competition in Australia in that
it involves a panel of French wine experts and commentators judging Victorian
wines. It is organised by the
French-Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Now
in its 18th year, it has become an established event on the Victorian wine
calendar, attracting participating vineyards, from small boutique wineries to
larger well-known wineries.
More
than 300 wines were entered this year and the judging panel was be led by
renowned Rhône Valley winemaker Michel Chapoutier. The panel included a group of five young
French sommeliers who topped France’s annual competition for sommeliers
students.
Winemakers
Ken Pollock and Ian McKenzie from BlackJack Vineyards are thrilled with the
result, noting that the win provides great acknowledgement for the wine, and
that the event is a good bench-marking opportunity. This is the third time that they’ve won this
prestigious trophy, after winning in the same category in both 1996 and 2004.
BlackJack
Vineyards is situated in the beautiful Harcourt Valley in the Bendigo Wine
Region. Their first wine was released in
1994, and since then has established an enviable reputation for producing fine
and generous red wine.
The
cellar door is on the Calder Highway in Harcourt, just over an hour from
Melbourne. It is open on weekends from
11am to 5pm and other times by appointment.
