NEWLY RELEASED WINE COMPANION GIVES RECOGNITION TO BENDIGO WINES.

25 July 2007

The 2008 edition of James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion was released yesterday and it has delivered some impressive results for the Bendigo Winegrowers Association and the region.

James Halliday is well-regarded as Australia’s top wine judge. He is a respected wine critic, book writer and vigneron. His career has spanned forty years and to receive a positive review from him is seen as a mark of approval in the Australian wine industry.

His annual book is Australia’s most definitive and well-respected guide to wines in this country.

In James Halliday’s assessment of the best wineries for the 2008 edition, four association wineries received five black stars, which denotes “outstanding winery capable of producing wines of a very high quality and did so this year”. These four wineries are Balgownie Estate, Knots Wines, Sandhurst Ridge and Turner’s Crossing Vineyard.

And Pondalowie Vineyards received the top accolade for a winery with five red stars, which denotes “outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity”.

His assessment of individual wines from the region also yielded some exceptional results with the most impressive being a rating of 96 points for the 2004 Turner’s Crossing Vineyard ‘The Cut’ Shiraz. Only three Shiraz wines rated higher with these receiving 97 points and including the 2002 Penfolds Grange.

“As a wine region, we are thrilled with the response from James Halliday this year,” said Paul Greblo, President, Bendigo Winegrowers Association. “Of the 30 wineries in our association who appear in the book, 22 had wines scoring 90 and over; this is seen as one key benchmark to quality.”

Wineries with wines scoring 90 points and over include Balgownie Estate, Belvoir Park Estate, Big Hill Vineyard, BlackJack Vineyards, Chaperon Wines, Chateau Leamon, Connor Park Winery, Glenalbyn, Glenwillow Vineyard, Harcourt Valley Vineyard, Knots Wines, Lake Cairn Curran Vineyard, Langanook Wines, Mandurang Valley Wines, Newbridge Wines, Nuggetty Winery, Passing Clouds, Pondalowie Vineyards, Rivergate Wines, Sandhurst Ridge, Turner’s Crossing Vineyard and Water Wheel Vineyard.
